ISE Connection: Alumni Newsletter, Fall 2023

From the Department Head

Friends of Virginia Tech ISE,

It's hard to believe we're nearing the end of fall semester, but reflecting on this past year is truly a treat. 2023 has been an outstanding year for the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering! Some highlights include:

  • Our undergraduate program is now ranked third in the nation, advancing a spot from last year. Our graduate program is ranked sixth, also advancing a spot from last year.
  • Don Taylor was recognized with the Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Industrial Engineering Award from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE).
  • Our graduate students and faculty in HFES and INFORMS earned top honors at their respective conferences as well.
  • Alpha Pi Mu at Virginia Tech earned first place in the Outstanding Chapter Awards by the organization's national headquarters.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement in Virginia Tech ISE. We look forward to continuing to prepare our students to be tomorrow's leaders and problem solvers.

Sensors provide clarity on how wound healing changes in space

Microgravity is known to put the wounds of astronauts at higher risk of scarring, but scientists don’t know why. Associate professor Blake Johnson and a team of engineers are sending an experiment up into orbit to find out.
