From the Department Head

Friends of Virginia Tech ISE, 

Another semester has come and gone, and we've stayed busy in the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering! It's been an incredible spring, and sone highlights include:

  • Alpha Pi Mu, Virginia Tech chapter received first place in the national best chapter competition. 
  • Our students received highly competitive national scholarships from both Alpha Pi Mu and IISE. 
  • Jia Dong was awarded the Graduate Student Service Award from Virginia Tech. 
  • Laura Savage, a collegaite associate professor, received the Certificate of Teaching Excelence during the Dean's Awards for Excellence. 

We also recognized our oustanding junior and senior students for the department. You can view the full list of award winners and recognition on our website, and check out more stories about faculty, students, and alumni below. 

Thank you for your continued support and engagement in Virginia Tech ISE. We look forward to continuing to prepare our students to be tomorrow's leaders and problem solvers.

Industrial and Systems Engineering inducts new members to Academy of Distinguished Alumni, celebrates prestigious award winners

In April, the department celebrated its 19th induction into the Industrial and Systems Engineering Academy of Distinguished Alumni, and awarded the Marvin H. Agee award, the most prestigious departmental alumni recognition. Additionally, two young alumni awards were presented. 

Sait Tunc receives NSF CAREER award to optimize health care systems for equitable outcomes

Tunc, assistant professor at Virginia Tech, has received over $500,000 for this five-year project to innovate health systems and improve wellness outcomes.

Meet the women challenging systems in engineering

During International Women’s Month, the 12 female teaching and research faculty of industrial and systems engineering shared what excites them about their field as well as the future of women in engineering.

Highly Cited Researchers 2023: Kwok Tsui

Kwok Tsui, a professor in ISE,  has been recognized as one of his field’s most cited researchers in the world. He was named as one of six Virginia Tech Researchers to Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers 2023 list.

FREE Upcoming Webinar: Navigating a Career in Engineering: Educational Impact to Success

Join the webinar hosted by Geoffrey Kerr with the Virginia Tech National Security Institute to learn more about the Virginia Tech Master of Engineering Administration (MEA) program and how Virginia Tech’s Commonwealth Campus Centers will be providing support for local clusters/cohorts of MEA students in the Roanoke, Richmond, Newport News and Abingdon regions. Regiatraion closes May 24, 2024. 

2024 Senior Design Symposium

52 teams participated in the Senior Symposium to showcase year-long senior design efforts, and five teams were recognized by the ISE Advisory Board. Congratulations to our group winners:
  • Application of ISE Tools Award: Transformative Management Solutions - Earned Value Management System (EVMS)
  • Project Performance Award: Logistics Management Institute - Resource Optimization Tool (ResOTo)
  • Innovation and Creativity Award: InMotion - AR Training Process
  • Integration and Implementation Award: Woodward - Resource Allocation Playbook
  • People's Choice Award: Infrabel - Train Delay Resilience

Gifts of all sizes can make an impact on ISE students

  • $10 provides the Harris Manufacturing Processes Lab with one pair of safety glasses for one of the 800+ students they teach each year.
  • $50 provides a Virginia Tech-branded polo shirt for a student to wear during a conference to represent the department and the university.
  • $100 allows the Harris Manufacturing Processes Lab to purchase one new welding helmet.
  • $500 supports a student in earning a professional certification in Six Sigma, Lean, Operational Analytics, or Certified ScrumMaster.
  • $1,500 provides a student with the opportunity to attend a conference to learn, present research, network, and expand their professional growth.
