Exploring how professional engineers understand complex systems

As a part of an NSF-funded project at Virginia Tech to explore how professional engineers understand complex systems, we are inviting you to complete the following survey. Data that we collect will be used to inform future course offerings, curriculum design, and will also help contribute to the national conversation on this topic. The survey should take about 20 minutes to complete. If you decide to continue, we would then wish to conduct an interview for approximately 40 minutes following the completion of the survey.

The survey and interview would be completed at your convenience.

If you choose to participate, the data collected will be reported in the aggregate. Individual participants will not be identified. If you complete the survey and include your email address at the end, we will send you a gift card for $25 in compensation for your time. Your email address will then be removed from the survey results so your responses will not be identifiable. After you have completed the survey, should you choose to participate in the follow-up interview, an additional gift card for $75 will be sent to you in completion for your participation.

This research project has been approved, as required, by the Institutional Review Board for Research Involving Human Subjects at Virginia Tech, under IRB #20-667.
