Product Wheel Optimization for Devils Backbone Brewing Company

As part of a year-long senior capstone project with three other undergraduate ISE students, I worked to create an optimized product wheel based on forecasted production demand and to develop a production planning tool for our client, Devils Backbone Brewing Company in Lexington, VA. Our team analyzed products for demands and variability, determined optimal sequences of production using both TSP and hill climbing algorithms, and assigned safety stock levels to meet CSL requirements.

Our team analyzed products for demands and variability, determined optimal sequences of production using both TSP and hill climbing algorithms, and assigned safety stock levels to meet CSL requirements.
The provided product wheel production plan resulted in an estimated annual savings of $282,000 which was measured through a 29% reduction in weekly operating hours and a significant reduction in inventory levels. Additionally, the development of a production planning tool following the product wheel methodology will allow the client to automate future production planning as new forecasted sales data becomes available.
As part of the annual Virginia Tech ISE Senior Symposium, our team was awarded first place overall in the category of Application of ISE Tools. Additionally, our team was nominated by the Virginia Tech ISE department and selected by a national IISE awards committee as one of three teams to present at the 2020 IISE Annual Conference. Our team was eventually awarded first place in the IISE Annual Capstone Competition against impressive finalists from both Ohio State and Georgia Tech.
