Overview of ISE Undergraduate Program at Virginia Tech

The Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering is a top-ranked program, offering a B.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering (BSISE) accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). It is one of the best known and highest-rated ISE programs in the United States. Career opportunities for ISEs have never been better, and our graduates work for manufacturing facilities, distribution warehouses, hospitals, airlines, railroads, banks, amusement parks, management consulting, military, and federal government organizations. One of the primary aims of the ISE is to create value for organizations by improving performance of integrated systems, for example, improving quality, productivity, costs, efficiency, worker safety, and/or customer satisfaction. The depth and breadth of the BSISE curriculum at Virginia Tech prepares our graduates to contribute to any organization in any industry.

ISE Department and Undergraduate Program Mission

The ISE Department has three primary objectives relating to its academic mission: 1) to provide the highest quality education for preparing undergraduate and graduate students for a life-long experience in the rapidly changing field of industrial engineering, and to further prepare these students for future leadership roles in the industrial engineering profession, in business, and in industry; 2) to conduct research toward advancing the frontiers of industrial engineering, supporting the industrial and economic growth of Virginia and the nation, and providing faculty with the latest knowledge and techniques for dissemination in the classroom; and 3) to serve the industrial engineering profession, industry, and society.

The mission of the ISE Undergraduate Program is to graduate industrial engineers having a broad education with coverage of manufacturing systems, operations research, human factors engineering and ergonomics, and management systems supported by a foundation in mathematical, physical, and social sciences. Our graduates are capable of contributing to enterprise competitiveness and human and societal well-being through the analysis, design, implementation, and improvement of integrated systems in any type of organization.
