(May 17, 2017) Mary Buckingham, a rising senior in ISE, was awarded the Dwight D. Gardner Scholarship from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE). This scholarship was given to only three undergraduate students in an industrial engineering program in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
In addition to her high academic performance, Mary also has leadership experience in multiple student organizations. She was the 2016-2017 Torgersen Leadership Summit chair, 2015-2016 Torgersen Leadership Summit associate chair, and 2014-2015 Six Sigma Green Belt Committee member, all as part of the IISE Virginia Tech student chapter. Because of her experiences, she became the president of IISE at VT in April 2017. She is also an Associate of the Consulting Group at VT and member of ISE Ambassadors. Recently, she and two other students were named the Robert P. Davis Outstanding Juniors in the ISE Department.
Mary will have an internship with Emory Healthcare this summer, working with the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department to help improve patient access at a hospital in Atlanta, GA.
