(May 23, 2017) Associate Professor Dr. Zhenyu “James” Kong and his graduate students received a Best Track Paper award and two Best Applications Paper Honorable Mention designations in the journal IISE Transactions at the 2017 Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) Annual Conference and Expo in Pittsburgh, PA.

Chen-ang Liu, David Roberson, and Dr. Kong won the Best Paper Award from the Quality Control and Reliability Engineering Track for their paper, “Images Based Online Closed Loop Quality Control for Additive Manufacturing Process.”  Chen-ang is currently a Ph.D. student in ISE, and David was an MS thesis student in ISE who graduated in summer 2016.

Kaveh Bastani, Dr. Kong, and two other researchers received Honorable Mention in the 2017 Best Application Paper Award Competition for the IISE Transactions Focus Issue on Design and Manufacturing for their paper “Compressive sensing–based optimal sensor placement and fault diagnosis for multi-station assembly processes.”  Kaveh earned his Ph.D. degree from ISE last year under Dr. Kong’s supervision at Virginia Tech, and is currently a data scientist at Unifund CCR.

Dr. Prahalada Rao, Dr. Kong, and four other researchers received Honorable Mention in the 2017 Best Application Paper Award Competition for the IISE Transactions Focus Issue on Quality and Reliability Engineering for their paper “A graph-theoretic approach for quantification of surface morphology variation and its application to chemical mechanical planarization process.”  Dr. Rao was a post-doctoral research associate in ISE under Dr. Kong’s supervision from 2014 to 2015, and is currently an assistant professor at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.
